Do High Efficiency Solar Panels Generate More Electricity than Low Efficiency Panels?

This question is part of the Super Big Solar Panel FAQ from Solar Mango, where expert answers to over 100 important questions on solar panels are provided.

Well, here’s something interesting – if you purchase 1 kW worth of low efficiency solar panels and 1 kW worth of high efficiency solar panels, both will generate pretty much the same amount of electricity for a given location.

You see, for solar panels, efficiency is defined as the amount of electricity output for the amount of light input.

A kW of solar panels, be they high efficiency or low efficiency, will receive different amounts of sunlight incident on them, because the low efficiency solar panels will have a higher area for the same wattage than the area for low efficiency panels.

Thus, the formula is simple – high efficiency panels will generate the same amount of electricity as low efficiency panels of same wattage, but will require a much lower area for the same.
