Multi-junction solar cells are solar cells with multiple p–n junctions made of different semiconductor materials. Multi-junction cells with more than one p-n junction have much higher efficiency than single-junction cells, but are also much more expensive.

The solar cells in the panels we use in almost cases are single junction solar cells.

Multi-junction solar cells, while they have a much higher efficiency than single junction, because of their much higher cost, have not yet entered the large scale commercial deployment and to a large extent are confined to research and demonstration projects, as of mid 2016.
